The Service Manager
Nathan Weathers, originally an Iowan, obtained his Luthier Merit Badge from Minnesota’s Southeast Technical College in Red Wing. He’s been Chris’ right-hand-man for years here at Third Coast, handling customer service and supervising the goings-on throughout the shop. He also spends a couple of days every week manning our Downer’s Grove satellite location. Despite all these various duties, he still manages to repair a few guitars and amps on a regular basis. Nate’s knowledge of guitars and amps could be fairly described as encyclopedic – as a lifelong horse-trader of music gear, he’s had his hands on a good deal more than your average tech has. If he’s not working in the shop, he’s usually jamming some sort of filthy rock-n-roll on a Thunderbird bass, hanging out with his sons, or doing something super-manly like shooting rifles or riding a motorcycle.
R.D. | The Master Tech
Although he’s been around the block a few times since, Robert Daniel (R.D.) originated not far from here in Merrilville, IN. As a young guitarist, Bob started getting curious and taking things apart. Eventually he developed more skill with putting them back together, leading to a long career in guitar repair and building including stints at Tobias Guitars and Washburn. He started at Bob’s Guitar Service in February of 1996 and has been the master tech since Chris bought the company in 1997. Bob doesn’t have the luxury of specializing, because he can do it all. His deep appreciation for detail compels him to get all the little subtleties right, making for major repairs and restorations that just look “right” whether they’re intended to look like new or not. R.D. enriches the shop environment with regular Hawkwind, Leonard Cohen, and Chrome listening sessions, makes a mean hobo skillet, and suggests that you take a few guitar lessons.
