It is possible that the Poly finish is "capping" the sound. There is a reason why fine guitar builders use nitrocellulose lacquer. Taking some of the finish down should help the overall tone of the guitar. Refinishing a Martin style guitar is a good bit of work as the guitar should be disassembled to do the refinishing. Refinishing a poly finished Martin guitar would run about $950.

Will taking off a new refinish job that utilized Urethane restore the tone quality of a vintage Martin guitar?
Also what would it run to take off the Urethane and replace with a less tone invasive product.
Would simply taking the new refinish down to minimal coverage, help with the tone restoration itself?
