I have a Gibson 65 trini lopez custom. It has a broke neck above the head stock. None of the keys are damaged and are intact, it is broke through the custom badge and through the rod. But the rod is not damaged either, just split around the rod the upper string nut.And it is still intact. I had it fixed but got re-broke during a move last year. And would like to get some kind of quote on the price to fix it. The last people I got to fix it, didn’t do that great of a job it has broke twice since they had fixed it.
Thank You very much Sincerely Eric Seitz
Eric, I imagine we will need to rebuild the headstock in some way. If something has been broken multiple times, and then repaired poorly, we have to cut out all the bad breaks and repairs and graft new wood in its place. We can do this pretty seamlessly, but it is not cheap! I would say, sight unseen, you would look to spend around $800. It is money well spent on that instrument though. Let me know, and send some pics if you can. That will help me know what course of action we could take.
I have a late sixties Mahogany Epiphone “Eldorado” style
FT90.I have not played in over 20 years. When I took
it out of the case I notice a crack down the center
of the back and the lower half of the front. The back
has some light scrathes.I was planning to sell but,
I need to have repair first.Could you please give me
an idea of the cost?
Thanks alot,
Sue
Sue. Repairing a crack down the center of a guitar usually runs about $165-200 depending on how long and how wide. When we are repairing multiple cracks, the second crack is usually less expensive. If the crack runs all the way down the back of the guitar, look to spend around $200, again, depending on the length and width of the crack. We should be able to take care of the scratches at the same time for no additional cost. Let me know if you need other questions answered.
Thanks Chris, that sounds alot less than I thought.
I really love this guitar.
Take care,
Sue
I have an Epiphone SG G-400. i accidentaly knocked it over, and now where the headstock and bridge meet is cracked on the backside of the guitar. How much would this cost
Christian,
A broken headstock is pretty common believe it or not. depending on the severity and what you want it to look like, look to spend $125-300 for most headstock breaks.
I have a Taylor 410CE, I actually brought it in because of a top crack right below the bridge all the way down. It has just recently cracked again down what looks like the exact same line.
Im realizing the culprit is the storage room we place the gutiar in at our church. There is a vent in the ceiling that would blow down over the instruments that we were not previously aware of.
How much would it cost to reseal the crack?
Thanks
Andy
Andy, if the guitar top crack is more than 3 inches (I am assuming it is), then it would run about $165-200 to fix it on a Taylor Guitar. It is super important to make sure the guitar is stored in an environment that is at least 45% humidity! Let me know if I can help out in any way
i have a 1995 fender stratocaster and its always out of tune by the end of every song so i have to tune it again again and again. i was wondering whats wrong with it? do i have to replace the neck? how much is it to replace with a new one. (total cost) thank you and have a good day!!!
It probably just needs a good guitar set up. that is where we use all the normal adjustments to make the guitar play as well as it can short of major fret work. A set up usually runs from $50-60 and can be done in a couple of days.
Hello. I have an Estabon guitar. I was practicing a couple of days ago, and I had just recently bought a strap for the guitar. I thought that is was securely strapped on. However, while I had it over my shoulder, as I was walking forward, the end that was connected to the neck slipped free and the guitar plummeted to the ground. So, I was just checking around on prices.
Thank you,
Brooke Phelps.
Feel free to e-mail me anytime.
What happened to the guitar? Did the headstock break on the guitar? That can be a common occurrence with a fall like that.
Hey Third Coast,
You guys are the best. You have done work on several guitars of mine, and I have always been happy with your work. I just picked up an old guitar on eBay(1970′s Selmer Signet). Got it very cheap, but it has a cracked neck near the headstock. see pics:

It sounds good, hold tune. How much $$ am I looking at here for a fix?
Thanks, LD
Ouch! No good, but super fixable. If you just want it solid and don’t need it touched up, it should be around $125-150. If you want us to air brush it and make it disappear, add another 4150 or so. thanks for the nice words!
Thanks, Chris.
Just having it solid would probably be fine. Believe me, this one is not air brush worthy!
Thanks again, LD
There you go then. We should be able to glue the guitar’s headstock back on and then set it up.
i backed my car over my estaban guitar and spashed the head stock .i glued everything back together . Things look okay but i figure as soon as i put strings bank on the glue won’t hold. i am also missing a fret about 2/3rds the way down the “melamine” (plastic) fret board. Any suggestions?
If the glue joint is tight, the headstock should hold on! As far as replacing the fret, you may need to get some wire from Stewart Macdonald or some other guitar repair website. Try getting some strings on it to see if the headstock will hold on before you put work into the frets. Let me know what happens!
I have a new Gibson Songwriter Deluxe and this guitar does not come with a neck bolt for a strap. (I have to use a loop system around the top of the neck which moves around quite a bit.) I want to see if you all can install one?
Thanks!!
A friend of mine just located and gave to me a Gibson Les Paul
Classic. We arent sure of the year model but he claims it is a reissue of a 1963 model. All I got is a serial # (021568) if that helps. Heres the bad news the head stock is broken from top to just past the last tunning key almost down the line where the holes are for the 3 keys on the left. And the neck is broken right inside the body cavity. Im no expert at the tech.
stuff but it looks like it could be fixed. Id like to have these two items fixed plus a little touch up work. Im not trying to make it look new, but I would like it to be done right and you guys seem to have your shop in order. Where, how, and when do I go from here to get some estimates and info?
Brian,
Installing a strap button on an acoustic guitar is a quick and easy fix for us. Bring in the guitar during shop hours, and we will do it for you while you wait. It runs about $10 installed. See you soon.
Just acquired a Selmer Signet mahogany acoustic guitar G#101 (sn73030580). It needs minor truss rod adjusting and would benefit from new tuners. I am wondering what the value is and if it is worth these minor repairs.
Kathy,
I am pretty sure that guitar is not worth a ton of money but it should be pretty solid and could benefit from some adjustments and certainly new tuners. You would spend about $125-150 for full setup, tuner install and the tuners (depending on what kind you want), and it should be a pretty solid piece. It may not even need the new tuners (although I am sure it could use them, the tuners that come on that guitar are not very good). If you just want to have it adjusted, cleaned up and restrung, it would only run you about $60-70.
Hi guys,
have been very happy in the past with your work. I just acquired a Jamine (Takamine) s-40 that’s missing the nut. It probably hasn’t been strung in years. Might need some neck adjustment. Approximately how much would it be to cut and install a bone nut with set up?
Thanks,
Dave
Sorry, that should be “Jasmine” acoustic.
Dave,
It really depends on a few factors. If you just want the minimum done just to get the guitar up and going, we could try fitting it with a new plastic nut. unfortunately, there are no standard sizes to most guitar that are made overseas, so we may have to fit one as best as we can. That usually runs around $30. If you want a properly fitting bone nut made by hand that will last a long time, that usually runs around $75. Setup is highly recommended as well on an older guitar like that. We discount nut and setup and a plastic fit nut and setup typically runs around $75 and a bone nut and set up is usually $100-110 (plus $5 for bone material). So it mostly depends on how great you want the guitar to sound and how much money you want to spend!
I have a Michael Kelly Dragonfly 5 String Acoustic Electric Bass that recently took a fall. The top half of the headstock broke clean off. I was wondering if you could give me a quote for the cost to fix this.
I have an Esteban acoustic/electric and my uncle says that the bridge isn’t connected to the big part (sorry guitar lingo challenged) correctly. He said if I don’t get it fixed it’ll keep going out of tune and will cost hundreds of dollars to fix. I’m just wondering how much it would cost exactly?
Sorry it took me so long to get back with you. It is a little hard to say how much it would be without inspecting the headstock crack in person. If the crack is clean and the two pieces key back together again, it should run you around $175. If the crack is not clean and there is missing wood, the repair could require additional structural work (called splining) to insure the headstock stays in place. That could be a $600 repair.
I have a repaired upper bout that was cracked in shipping about 6 inches long running lenght wise, that was repaired before I bought the Guitar.it also looks like a smaller crack about 3″ 1/2″ long above the other Crack from front to rear at a slight angle closer to the sound board. Could this affect the intoination of the guitar? The repair job was not a very well done job as it seems a lot of unevenness in the finnish and alot of sub surfice scratches which extend to the back side of the bout. And how much do you think this will affect the value of my guitar it is a martin d-45? Thank you.
I can’t imagine the intonation on the guitar being effected, but you can never tell without looking at the guitar. As far as devaluing the instrument, it certainly will devalue the instrument. A well repaired top crack can add tremendous value to the guitar.
I have an Ibanez UV7BK Universe 7 string in desperate need of a truss rod replacement. The neck bow is not severe enough to have cracked the neck, but i have been told by local guitar techs that the truss rod is broken. Would it be possible for you to give me a quote on what a truss rod replacement would cost for this particular guitar? Thank you for your time.
Well, sight unseen, I would quote you out at about $350-650 plus materials. The fretboard needs to be removed, truss rod replaced, fretboard put back on and often times, we need to refret the neck. There are lots of variables when performing a traumatic repair like that! It may be more cost effective to have the neck replaced.
I have had and played an Ovation Balledeer for over 30 years. The Top cracked from the bridge all the way back to the bottom. One straight crack. I suspect the room I kept it in the past 4-5 years has been too dry at times. Can this be fixed? If so how much and how do I go about getting this done? Thank You, Dale Prichard, Portland, TN 37148
To give you an accurate quote, I would really need to see the guitar. The finish on those guitars does tend to crack in that area over a period of time. the finish is very thick on the Ovations, and can be very difficult to touch up. To make those kind of cracks disappear, we often have to refinish the top of the guitar. If you can send photos to thirdcoastguitar@gmail.com, I can give you a much better idea of what we can do
I have a collector edition year 2000 Celebrity Deluxe, Birds Eye Maple arch top. The action is higher than I like. I took it to a local dealer, he said he made it as good as he can. I feel its still to high. Not sure what the skill level of our locals are. What might it cost to get this repaired.
Thanks,
Joe
Joe,
I would really have to see it, but often, those necks come out of their set and it is virtually impossible to fix them properly. Celebrity doesn’t even repair those at the factory. If you are the original owner, you may be able to send it back to Kaman Music (owner of Celebrity) and they would replace the guitar minus a fee (that is usually around $250). Try contacting them through their website http://www.kamanmusic.com. If you would rather, you can send it in for us to evaluate.
I recently sent in my black Gibson SG Standard to your shop and when i went a nice man at the front desk gave me a yellow slip wich had his price range estimate for my broken headstock. from what I remember you told me it would be $300-$400. It seems that I have misplace my yellow slip, would this be a problem when i pick up my guitar?
Not a problem at all. Just bring in your ID and we can match your name in the computer!
I recently acquired a left handed Paul Reed Smith Custom 22. I noticed that there is a crack in the finish where the neck joins the body. It’s on the bass side of the neck. The clearcoat finish appears to have pulled away from the body and the neck in this area, right along the joint. The crack extends up to the top of the body and runs along the seam between the body and fret board, all the way to the neck pickup. The treble side and bottom of the joint appear normal. The guitar plays fine and stays in tune. Can I leave well enough alone, or is it possible the joint could become unstable?
It is probably stable, although I would really have to see it to be sure. Sometimes, the expansion and contraction can cause the paint to crack slightly, although the wood joints are stable. As long as it doesn’t drive you crazy cosmetically, I would probably just leave it be.
Thanks for your reply re: lefty Paul Reed Smith. Do you think it detracts materially from the value of an otherwise good condition, 8 year old guitar? I just bought it on eBay. I don’t think the seller even realized it was there.
Any damage done to a guitar, either structural or cosmetic, detracts from the monetary value. If you got a good deal on it and you don’t really care about what it looks like, all the better. If you paid normal money for it and it has a visible issue, you may see some value lost if you ever decide to sell it.
I have a 1947 Gibson L12P whose neck has broken through the heel. The cleat is still in the body of the guitar. Is this an impossible fix? Will a new neck need to be fitted?
Thanks,
Sam
Makes the repair a bit tough but not impossible. A new neck would probably not be a great solution. I am sure we can salvage the old neck and maintain originality. It would be good to see some photos. You can send them to thirdcoastguitar@gmail.com and I can look at them and give you a better idea about how to repair and restore your Gibson.
Hello. I have a 1902 to1908 gibson acoustic. It needs alot of work. The neck is still attached to the body but not in great shape. The body is warped on the sides a bit and there is a crack on the back and there is no bridge. Was wondering if its worth having it redone and if so how much might it cost? Thank u for any information u can give.
As far as a quote, it is hard to do without having the guitar in hand. I would imagine the guitar needs to have the neck reset and refretted and you would certainly need a new bridge. I am assuming this is an archtop style guitar? You should email some photos if you can, and I can be much more specific about fixing the guitars. Email me at thirdcoastgutiar@gmail.com
I have a westbury standard it has 2 broken tuning knobs the nut is missing and their is a crack going from where the nut wood be down near the body of the guitar theirs also a few nicks I also want to get the whole thing repainted to be a sunburst but using a dark blue and having it fade to black if thats possible about how much would it cost
